In this role, you define IPC objectives for a project or a mission, you set up regular monitoring mechanisms for IPC activities and you analyse the results. Your goal is to upgrade infection prevention and control in the project following the IPC advisors' (Amsterdam based) recommendations and MSF policies. You also participate in a contingency plan and emergency preparation, depending on the context and possible scenarios. This includes close collaboration with IPC supervisors (could be national and international staff) to whom you provide technical supervision. You develop a training plan for them and you coach and give guidance on existing tools like audits, checklists and surveillance. You set up mechanisms for implementation and adherence to precautions for air, droplet and contact transmissible disease when indicated, putting isolation algorithms in place and ensuring adequate nosocomial outbreak detection and response. You guarantee compliance to aseptic care techniques and the correct use of antiseptics, disinfectants and detergents. You monitor and analyse consumption of IPC materials and equipment.

You work together closely with the medical and the non-medical (coordination, human resources, finance and logistics) teams in the design and implementation of 'clean and dirty flows'. With the support of the HR department you ensure there is a team with appropriate size, capabilities and skills in place. You produce reports with information and recommendations for the monthly medical reporting.

Note: IPC standard precautions include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), hand hygiene, prevention of accidental exposure to body fluids, barrier nursing, safe and appropriate treatment of re-usable medical devices, waste management, cleaning and disinfection of surface and environment, respiratory hygiene and individual hygiene for staff, caretakers and patients IPC essential requirements include water supply, solid waste and waste water treatment/disposal, latrines and shower facilities, dead bodies management, vector control and medical waste management.

Requirements for Infection Control Supervisors


  • BA or MA degree in Nursing or Medicine
  • Min. 3 years of work experience as a project lead with infection control in healthcare settings in low-resource settings for an NGO
  • 2 years of management experience
  • A fluent command of  English (minimum B2)
  • Ability to motivate, train and manage team members, guide staff development and identify training needs
  • Excellent reporting skills
  • Ability to cope with stress and to organize and prioritize workload
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work in an international team
  • Willingness to work in an unstable and insecure environment
  • Availability of 9-12 months




  • Education or degree in the field of Infection Prevention Control
  • Work experience in OT or Intensive Care Unit
  • Training in health education/promotion/public health is an asset
  • Work experience in an emergency setting
  • A fluent command of French (minimum B1, fluent is a minimum of C1)
