At the World Economic Forum (hereafter the "Forum", “we”, “our”), we respect your privacy and we want to be transparent about the types of personal data we collect about you and how we use it. In this Job Application Privacy Notice (hereafter the "Notice") we explain who we are, how we collect, share and use personal data we obtain from individuals who apply to a job announcement via the Careers page of our website (hereafter “Website”).  

The Forum, with registered offices at 91-93 route de la Capite, CH-1223 Cologny/Geneva, Switzerland, processes your personal data as a controller in accordance with applicable legislation with regard to the processing of personal data, namely Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (hereafter "GDPR") and any applicable national data protection acts, including the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection of 19 June 1992 (Status as of 1 January 2014) (together "Applicable Laws").

This Notice sets out the personal data that we collect and process about you during the online application process, the purposes of the processing and the rights that you have in connection with it. This Notice applies both to external applicants and to employees of the Forum who are applying for a position.

General information that you provide voluntarily via our website

During the online application and recruitment process, we may collect the following types of personal data about you:

  • identification and contact details  (such as your name, address, telephone/email address, photograph, IDs, date of birth, gender, nationality and other  information that identifies you),
  • educational and employment background  (such as academic/professional qualifications, job qualifications, education, language skills, CV/résumé, transcripts and employment references, including contact details of prior employers,
  • job application information  (such as the role for which you are applying, your job application and related documentation/communications, cover letters, information from interviews and phone screenings, compensation/benefits requests, relocation information),
  • immigration and work permit data , and
  • previous applications/roles  (information relating to previous applications you have made to the Forum and/or any previous employment history at the Forum).

Information collected during the recruitment interview and testing phase

During our selection process, we ask our candidates to answer certain questions concerning their knowledge about the Forum and their motivation. We may also ask some candidates to take a psychometric test for certain positions. Our recruiters may also take notes during the interview process.

Sensitive personal data

We do not deliberately request any information that reveals your racial or ethnic origin, religion, political or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, genetic or biometric information, or information about your health/sex life or sexual orientation during the job application process, and we therefore ask you not to provide such information. Note, however, that if you choose to provide your photo (or if you make it available in your CV), this may reveal your racial or ethnic background.

Information that we collect automatically

During the online application process, we may collect certain information automatically from the computer or device you are using, such as your IP address, device type, unique device identification numbers, browser-type, preferences, broad geographic location (e.g. country or city-level location) and other technical information. For more information about the online collection of your personal data via our Website, including information about the types of cookies and other online technology we use our Website, please read our web Privacy Policy.

For what purposes we use your personal data

The Forum collects  the personal data you provide through the online application process for the purposes of managing the Forum's online job application and recruitment process. Consequently, the Forum may use your personal data for the following purposes:

  • to allow you to set up and maintain an online account on our Website in order to apply to the positions that are posted on our Careers page,
  • to enable you to contact us and us to respond and provide feedback,
  • to evaluate and select job applicants including for example setting up and conducting interviews and tests,
  • to evaluate and assess the results thereto and as is otherwise needed during the recruitment process, including the final recruitment,
  • to communicate with you during the recruitment process,
  • to put in place necessary arrangements for your future employment if you are offered a position,
  • to manage our Website, and
  • to generally manage and improve our recruitment and hiring processes.

If you are accepted for a job at the Forum, the information collected during the online application process will form part of your ongoing employment record. In such a case, please also note that additional information may be asked to complete your recruitment in accordance with our internal Employee Privacy Policy.

  1. Who we share your personal data with

We take care to allow access to personal data only to those who require such access to perform their tasks and duties, and to third parties who have a legitimate purpose for accessing it. Whenever we allow a third party to access personal data, we will implement appropriate measures to guarantee the information is used in a manner consistent with this Notice and that the security and confidentiality of the information is maintained.

Disclosures to other Forum entities

The Forum operates at a global level and we may from time to time share your personal data with our other offices outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland in order to manage our recruitment process at a global level, as well as for other legitimate business purposes such as compliance with Applicable Laws.

Disclosures to third party service providers

Our jobs application platform Taleo is powered by Oracle who is the third party service provider we have chosen to manage our online recruitment platform.

In addition, your personal data may be transmitted to other third party service providers who perform services on our behalf, such as prior screenings, assessments and psychometric testing. Finally, information about your online activity when using and navigating our Website will generally be shared with third parties whom we have selected to run, manage and operate our Website.

Disclosures to other third parties

We may also disclose personal data to other third parties on other lawful grounds, including:

  • to comply with our legal obligations, including where necessary to abide by law, regulation or contract, or to respond to a court order, administrative or judicial process, including, but not limited to, a subpoena or search warrant,
  • in response to lawful requests by public authorities (including for national security or law enforcement purposes),
  • as necessary to establish, exercise or defend against potential, threatened or actual litigation,
  • where necessary to protect the vital interests of  another person, and/or
  • in connection with the sale, assignment or other transfer of all or part of our business,
  • based on your prior explicit consent.
  1. On what legal basis we process your personal data

We will process the personal data about you we collect during the online application process based on the necessity to manage our relationship with you, our legitimate interests to carry out recruitment and to manage the hiring process and/or, where you are considered for employment, to take steps prior to entering an employment contract with you. We may also use your personal data to comply with Applicable Laws, or to protect the rights and interests of the Forum, our employees, applicants and others, as required and permitted by Applicable Law.

Without your personal data, we cannot complete the hiring process or manage our future work relationship with you, nor comply with Applicable Laws.

  1. Transfers of personal data outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland

The Forum operates at a global level, and consequently, we may need to transfer some personal data to countries other than the ones in which your personal data was originally collected, for example, for global recruitment and immigration purposes. Some of these countries may be located outside the European Union (EU) / European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. Where that is the case, the Forum will implement appropriate or suitable safeguards to ensure that an adequate level of protection is provided to personal data that is transferred outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, such as entering into EU standard contractual clauses with the data importer, or implementing other measures to provide an adequate level of data protection under EU law.   1. How long we store your personal  data

We retain personal data we collect from you only as long as is necessary to carry out the purposes described in this Notice or to comply with applicable legal, tax or accounting requirements. 

If you are not successful, the Forum will keep your application form (including notes, assessments and evaluations that are made during the selection and interview phase) on file for future job openings for a limited period of time after which it will be deleted. If you are successful and offered a job at the Forum, your personal data will be used to complete your hiring process by our People & Culture Department.

Regarding the online account you have created on our Careers page, we will store your personal data for as long as you are actively using and logging into your account. If you do not log into your account after certain period of time, we reserve the right to close your account. We will send you a warning by email prior to closing your account. Deletion of closed account will include the deletion of all applicable account information, including contact details and CVs.

We are committed to ensuring the security of your personal data. We utilize robust precautions to protect the confidentiality and security of the personal data within our Website, by employing technological, physical and administrative security safeguards, such as firewalls and carefully developed security procedures, for example, when you enter confidential information (such as login credentials or information submitted from within the website). These technologies, procedures and other measures are used in an effort to ensure that your personal data remains safe, secure, and only available to you and to those you authorized to access your personal data. However, no internet, e-mail or other electronic transmission is ever fully secure or error free, so you should take care in deciding what information you send to us in this way.

The services we provide on this website are not intended for individuals below the age of 18. If you are under 18, please do not submit any applications on this website.
